Explanation: Spooky shapes seem to haunt this starry expanse, drifting through the night in the royal constellation Cepheus. Of course, the shapes are cosmic dust clouds faintly visible in dimly reflected starlight. Far from your own neighborhood on planet Earth, they lurk at the edge of the Cepheus Flare molecular cloud complex some 1,200 light-years away. Over 2 light-years across the ghostly nebula and relatively isolated Bok globule, also known as vdB 141 or Sh2-136, is near the center of the field. The core of the dark cloud on the right is collapsing and is likely a binary star system in the early stages of formation. Even so, if the spooky shapes could talk, they might well wish you a happy Halloween.

Like Hollywood legends Audrey Hepburn and Katharine Hepburn, dark energy and dark matter are completely unrelated, even though they share a name. Dark energy, a force that makes the universe expand faster and faster all the time, is called dark because it's mysterious. Nobody knows what it is. Dark matter, on the other hand, a type of matter that outweighs ordinary stars and galaxies 5 to 1, is called dark because it's utterly invisible. We know it's there because its gravity yanks galaxies and stars around, but it neither emits nor reflects any light.

HH-222: The Waterfall Nebula

Explanation: What created the Waterfall Nebula? No one knows. The structure seen in the region of NGC 1999 in the Great Orion Molecular Cloud complex is one of the more mysterious structures yet found on the sky. Designated HH-222, the elongated gaseous stream stretches about ten light years and emits an unusual array of colors. One hypothesis is that the gas filament results from the wind from a young star impacting a nearby molecular cloud. That would not explain, however, why the Waterfall and fainter streams all appear to converge on a bright but unusual non thermal radio source located toward the upper left of the curving structure.Another hypothesis is that the unusual radio source originates from a binary system containing a hot white dwarf, neutron star, or black hole, and that the Waterfall is just a jet from this energetic system. Such systems, though, are typically strong X-rays emitters, and no X-rays have been detected. For now, this case remains unsolved. Perhaps well-chosen future observations and clever deductive reasoning will unlock the true origin of this enigmatic wisp in the future.

Now he has written a book, “The Social Animal,” in order to assemble the evidence for a certain conception of the human mind, the wellsprings of action and the causes of success and failure in life, and to draw implications for social policy. The Moon is not only beautiful, it is vital to our ecosystems and wildlife

The speed at which the Moon is moving away from Earth could affect life on the planet, but this could take billions of years to happen, writes space scientist Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock.

It's easy to take the Moon for granted, even on a clear night when it can light up the sky. It really feels as if it has always been there just as it is now, throughout history. But that's not strictly true.

It is thought that the Moon was formed when a proto-planet about the size of Mars collided with the early Earth around 4.5bn years ago. The debris left over from impact coalesced to form the Moon. Computer simulations of such an impact are consistent with the Earth Moon system we see in the 21st Century.

The simulations also imply that at the time of its formation, the Moon sat much closer to the Earth - a mere 14,000 miles (22,530.8 kilometres) away, compared to the quarter of a million miles (402,336 kilometres) between the Earth and the Moon today.

In another part of the world, it would have been a straightforward public-works project. A highway was too narrow to handle the increasing flow of traffic, so the authorities brought in heavy equipment to widen it. Partway through the job, however, a road-leveling tractor uncovered the opening to a cave no one knew was there. Work came to an immediate halt, and within hours a scientific swat team descended on the site to study it.

That's the law in Israel, where civilization goes back at least 5,000 years and where a major archaeological find could be lurking under any given square foot of real estate. Just about every empire since the beginning of Western history has occupied these lands, or fought over them, or at least passed through — Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Greeks, Romans, Turks, Crusaders — leaving behind buildings or burial places or artifacts. Cancer Society Focuses on Risks of Pollution

Although many carcinogens have been removed from working and living environments, many potential hazards remain, including building materials, additives or contaminants in food and water, and pollutants, indoors and out, the American Cancer Society reported in a major statement on environmental dangers.

The statement is part of an ACS program to explore and elucidate the links between pollution and cancer, including a position statement outlining the organization's methods, goals, and overall role in prevention.

"The ACS's prevention activities take many forms, but are primarily focused on modifiable risk factors that have been demonstrated to have a substantial impact on cancer risk in human populations," Elizabeth T.H. Fontham, DrPH, of Louisiana State University in New Orleans, and colleagues wrote in November/December issue of CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians./.../

Novo instituto vai estudar no território nacional

Uma nova instituição vai colaborar para a formulação de estratégias do Plano Nacional de Mudança do Clima e para a elaboração dos relatórios de medidas nacionais e multilaterais apresentados nas Conferências das Partes da Convenção de Mudanças Climáticas da ONU.

Na semana passada, foi inaugurado o Instituto de Tecnologia e Engenharia das Mudanças Globais em Energia e Meio Ambiente, que vai realizar estudos de identificação de vulnerabilidades, ações de mitigação e adaptação a mudanças climáticas no território nacional.

Convênio entre o Ministério da Ciência e da Tecnologia e o Instituto Alberto Luiz Coimbra de Pós-graduação e Pesquisa de Engenharia da UFRJ - Coppe permitirá o repasse de R$ 3 milhões da Finep e outros R$ 800 mil pelo CNPq.

Integração - O trabalho no Instituto do Clima será realizado de forma integrada com várias unidades da Coppe, tais como Instituto Virtual de Mudanças Climáticas (Ivig), que trata de tecnologias e energias sustentáveis, e o Programa de Planejamento Energético, que inclui o Centro de Estudos Integrados sobre Meio Ambiente e Mudanças Climáticas (Centro Clima). Também fazem parte da parceria o Programa de Engenharia de Transportes, que já desenvolve estudos associados ao tema como, por exemplo, mobilidade e sociedade de baixo carbono.

O instituto contará com o suporte do supercomputador da Coppe, um dos mais potentes da América Latina, fruto da cooperação com a Petrobras. O equipamento entrará em operação ainda este ano para desenvolvimento de modelos climáticos aplicados à engenharia. Atualmente, quatro professores da Coppe participam do grupo de energias renováveis do Painel Intergovernamental de Mudanças Climáticas (IPCC).
A Coppe já é sede do Fórum Brasileiro de Mudanças Climáticas e tem participado das reuniões com a Presidência da República, Ministério Minas Energia, Ministério do Meio Ambiente e Casa Civil para definir a posição brasileira na Convenção do Clima de Copenhague, em dezembro.

While Washington D.C. celebrated the inauguration of President Barack Obama, the staff at the satellite imagery company GeoEye were hard at work, processing a unique view of the nation's capital. One of the world's most advanced imaging satellites (used by Google Maps and Google Earth) called GeoEye-1 was able to grab this incredible image from orbit, providing a view none of the cameras on the ground could experience.

It's hard to imagine why Flemish Renaissance artist Peter Paul Rubens would paint a blemish on the backside of one of the fleshy lovelies meant to represent beauty, charm and good cheer, but there's no denying that single red brushstroke in the midst of his central figure's creamy skin. At least not now that the painter's 1638 masterpiece The Three Graces is available in ultra-high definition on Google Earth.

Introduction

The 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) was the most recent of a series of attempts to deal holistically with global environmental issues by holding high-profile, multi-issue policy summits. The last thirty years of such summitry have not only yielded a rapidly expanding global environmental agenda but have also witnessed a noteworthy evolution in the policy framing of global environmental issues.

The first of these mega-meetings, held at Stockholm, Sweden, in 1972, was called the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment (UNCHE) and dealt with – as its name rightly suggests – a rather small set of issues that were most directly related to the ‘human environment’. Twenty years later, a far more elaborate agenda came under discussion at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, when the more ambitiously titled United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) sought to radically expand the global agenda by moving well beyond the merely environmental and seeking to establish ‘environment and development’ as the central policymaking framework. By 2002, in Johannesburg, South Africa, the concept of ‘sustainable development’ which had already begun to assume salience at Rio gained further centrality not only by being incorporated into summit’s title but also by becoming the key motivator of the expanded Johannesburg agenda, which now included such issues as sanitation, HIV/AIDS and poverty eradication.

If this evolution – from a policy framework principally rooted in ‘environmental’ concerns to one imbedded in the broader and more integrated notion of ‘sustainable development’ – is to be anything more than rhetorical it should be reflected not only in the titles of the major conferences but also in how particular issues are tackled at these summits. This paper will review one such issue, energy, in terms of a) how it relates to sustainable development at a conceptual level; and b) whether there is any noticeable difference in how it was treated at the three major global environmental summits, in particular, at WSSD./.../

Physicist Sean Carroll gave a wonderful talk at the June 2008 American Astronomical Society meeting about his "speculative research" on what possibly could have existed before The Big Bang. (Here's an article about Carroll's talk.) But now Carroll and some colleagues have done a bit more than just speculate about what might have come before the beginning of our Universe. Carroll, along with Caltech professor Marc Kamionkowski and graduate student Adrienne Erickcek have created a mathematical model to explain an anomaly in the early universe, and it also may shed light on what existed before the Big Bang. "It's no longer completely crazy to ask what happened before the Big Bang," said Kamionkowski.

MADRID, Spain, Nov. 26 -- The number of biologic agents for rheumatoid arthritis has increased in recent years, but the best results come from more effective use of available treatments, researchers found.

Explain to patients who ask that although newer drugs for rheumatoid arthritis have improved treatment since 2000, better management of treatment, including use of older drugs such as methotrexate, proved more important than specific drugs.

Disease activity scores decreased, independent of the availability of new therapies, both in patients with severe and milder disease, Isidoro González-Alvaro, M.D., of the Hospital de la Princesa in Madrid, and colleagues reported in Arthritis Research and Therapy.

TNF antagonists and Leflunomide (Arava) have shown efficacy in randomized controlled trials, not only controlling disease activity but also slowing or arresting radiological damage, the researchers wrote.

However, they said, when used outside of clinical trials, the effectiveness of new drugs may differ, in part because clinical-trial patients are generally younger, have less comorbidity, and show greater disease activity than real-life patients./.../
